Have you had back, neck, or shoulder pain and cast an accusatory glance at your mattress? Or your pillow? It must be the culprit!
I felt this way myself and hear it a lot from clients. They often ask: What is the best sleep position to avoid pain?
Getting great sleep is the foundation of good health. Avoiding pain is just the beginning.
Keeping your airway open is also important.
The Mayo Clinic asserts that side sleeping is just right.
I’ve always been a side-sleeper. But that has not protected me from pain.
I have tried lots of different pillows in a quest for an amazing night’s sleep. I’ve always bought “good” mattresses.
So when I saw an ad for the “SONU Sleep System,” I wanted to know more.
I bought one just over a year ago. I have no affiliation with the brand.
Here’s my honest take, especially as a body worker.
It’s dope.
I love a lot of things about it. The most important: it eliminates pressure on the shoulder joint while side sleeping.
Because it has a hole cut into it. They call this a sleep channel.
It makes spooning easy peasy.
Given we spend a third of our lives sleeping, I think investing in a bed that gives you the best sleep possible makes sense.
Yes, I said investment. I spent over $3500 on a king size. And I would do it again.
What don’t I like about it?
While you can take the mattress cover off to wash it, the mattress cover is zipped around the entire mattress. I wish they made a classic elasticized mattress protector with the sleep channel designed into it.
I wish I knew more about the material. They don’t reveal the type of foam it’s made from. The naturopath is against foam in furniture, so I would genuinely pay more if they somehow made it out of hemp.
I also wish they sold the fitted sheet separately. You have to buy a whole sheet set, so now I have flat sheets I don’t use because I don’t use flat sheets.
They make a great mattress, but the pillows I bought from them suck. The filling quickly thins in the middle and balls up at the two ends. Zero stars.
And let’s face it, while the website and informational videos are well put together, for what they are charging, the brand lacks creativity and fun. I think ChatGPT as their agency could do better.
On top of this, they are the type of brand that is ALWAYS having a sale. I find this to be a deceptive practice. I’ve never seen the price reduction turned off and imagine there will be a lawsuit someday.
Knowing the good and the bad, what do you think? Would you buy a SONU Sleep System (aka The Donut Bed)?
This is top of mind for me at the moment. I think I’m going to try to habituate more sleeping on my back prior making such an investment. I had a very cheap €69 sofa bed from ikea a few years back which when unfolded in bed form, you could create this little foldable gap similar to the design of these mattresses. Maybe a good place to start if you want to experiment? :)
